Overview
Arthur Mellows Village College is a secondary school in Glinton in the local authority of Peterborough. The college is an academy with a specialism in technology.Olympic gymnast Louis Smith and footballers Luke Steele and Lia Cataldo are amongst the alumni.
The school is named after its founder, Arthur Holditch Mellows, a British army captain from the Hunts Cyclist Battalion who was promoted to colonel during World War I, served in Iraq during the 1920s, and commanded local Home Guard units during World War II. In the interwar years he became a solicitor, and from 1935–37 he was Mayor of Peterborough.
The Brief
The refectory at the college has a large capacity along with a full kitchen that produces a lot of heat and food smells. To alleviate the odours the client wanted a sustainable natural solution to deal with the smells and provide suitable ventilation for the occupants.
Our Solution
Based on the layout our design required four windcatchers mounted at roof level that transfer fresh air into the space to constantly ventilate the room with 10 air changes per hour or fresh air to maintain a comfortable environment and eliminating the smells associated with the kitchen.
