Overview
Brighton Library is a social hub for their residents of Brighton, not only as a library but offering needed help for the disadvantaged people of the city. The building is three stories high constructed around a vast open atrium.
The Brief
Vision Ventilation were commissioned to design the natural ventilation extract system for the building. Following discussions with the Consultants and Architects on the project we set off to design what is now installed on the roof as an effective ventilation system with great aesthetic appeal.
Our Solution
We designed a ‘turnkey’ solution to install 3 No. natural ventilation towers that allow the internal passive stack to be vented outside the building via an internal motorised glazed damper fitted in the throat of the unit. The damper opens via the Building Management System (BMS) when the warm air rises it is extracted through the fixed louvred ventilation turret mounted at the top of the tower. The top of the tower is glazed to allow light into the building and to assist with heating the rising passive stack.
The shape of the wind turrets is specifically designed to reduce the cross-sectional area as the air enter the roof turret. The reduction of the area and the heated air creates an acceleration of the air movement guaranteeing a constant extract flow. To prevent the external wind pressure adversely affecting the extract air path each of the louvre faces is fitted with balance gravity dampers that when the wind pressure passing through the louvre get too great, they cause the damper blades to close preventing air entering the top of the turret to allow uninterrupted air flow on the leeward side of the turret.
