Overview
GRP Solutions is a specialist composite chemical distributor based at Portfield Road in Portsmouth. Due to the nature of the products stored, the levels of Styrene must be constantly monitored and controlled for health and safety reasons.
The Brief
Vision Ventilation was commissioned to design and implement a Natural Ventilation solution that would monitor and control the styrene levels.
Our Solution
The warehouse ventilation is achieved with a series of natural ventilation roof units positioned along the ridge line. Each unit has internal quadrant splitter plates to harness the prevailing wind directing it down into the building below.
The density and wind pressure of the prevailing wind forces air into the space down to low level whilst displacing warm contaminated air up and out through the leeward side of the turrets.
The turret design provides constant ventilation under all weather conditions regardless of external wind direction. The system has an automated control strategy to open and close the dampers in each turret to maintain a constant steady state of air flow. In extreme weather conditions such as high wind speeds or rain the system automatically shuts down to prevent water ingress into the building.
The natural ventilation system is monitored by a series of gas sensors located throughout each racking line at finished floor level. These sensors monitor the levels of styrene. In the event the sensors detect excessive of levels of Styrene the system automatically opens all the ventilation to purge the internal space.
